Announcement: Installing a WD MyBook Essential 1TB Ext HD to your PPC G5
Posted: Huntn @ Thu Sep 17, 2009 4:02 pm
I just thought I'd mention this for anyone who is thinking of using a Western Digital 1TB drive on your PPC Mac running 10.4, that is, if you are not all ready familiar.

Short story: the MyBook Essential 1 TB external USB 2.0 drive is not compatible out of the box with a Mac PPC computer.

The solution is to download the WD Macintosh + Turbo Drive utility and install it on your PPC Mac. I have a G5 and it worked.

I also noticed during the process, that most of my peripherals were plugged into a USB 1.0 Hub, when I plugged this hd into that bus, transferring a 18GB folder, was going to take 7 hours. I figured out that my G5 has USB2.0. I swapped around some plubs and plugged it directly into my G5 and the same 18GB folder was 15 min to transfer. I'll probably be getting a USB 2.0 hub in the near future. Smile
